  • Increased parental involvement is encouraged and;

  • Diversity is celebrated in its fullest form.

Week 1 — Colors and Shapes

Teaching Toddler Colours & Shapes

  • Beginning with the primary colours- Red, Blue and Yellow, we teach your toddler to recognize and sort through teacher inspired activities. Parents can join in the fun by having three objects at home that are used to verbally reinforce the colour lessons.

  • When your toddler can recognize the three primary colours individually and successfully sort them, your teacher will introduce three more colours. (Suggestion: using art mediums, mix yellow and blue to show the result of green!) Paint and pastels are great mediums to try at home.

  • Every child learns at their own pace. Our goal at LCCC is to have each toddler reach some milestones before graduating to our preschool program.

Using our unique four week cycle, we will encourage your toddler to learn to recognize and sort a variety of colours, through interactive teacher led activities. Parents can follow along and join in the fun by having similar activities at home. Check with your teacher for details of the current colours we are learning.

  • When teaching your toddler, we begin with the four basic shapes: square, triangle, rectangle and the circle. Dual learning through the emergent curriculum allows us to incorporate colours and shapes together.

Parents can encourage their toddler through questions, such as “What shape is that?” when out and about on fun drives.

Your teacher will create different activities during the colours and shapes week, be sure to check in and be part of the adventure!

Week 2 — All About Space

Introducing Space To Toddlers

  • Space themed activities are one of our most popular. Toddlers love learning about the planet they live on. We use many mediums to teach about space and our planets. Our various activities will reinforce your toddler’s connection to the planet we share.

Our introduction to space will be with the planet earth. Parents can print out colouring pages here.

  • After introducing our toddlers to our planet, we expand outwards and learn about our Sun. Parents can follow along by encouraging your child, when at home or at the playground, to notice where the sun is and what it does for our planet.

You can further engage your child through downloading a sun colouring page here.

  • In our Toddler program, we hope to introduce the planets in fun and interactive ways. Your child’s teacher will choose the planet we are working on and will create an accompanying activity for the week.

Here are the planets in order of distance from the sun:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune. Follow along by asking your child about the planet they are learning.

  • Using interactive mediums, such as tactile, visual and auditory, your teacher will introduce the idea of Rocket Ships to your child.

You can participate in the fun by creating cardboard and tinfoil ships at home.

Week 3 — Beginning To Recognize Letters

Teaching Toddlers Their Letters

  • One of the milestones we encourage our toddlers to reach is how to recognize their name.

We begin this with the very first letter! Each child will be given opportunities to interact with the first letter of their name- from our alphabet learning toys to our various art mediums. This week, your teacher will create a fun activity that supports this theme.

Parents can follow along by using the environment around them. Make a game of finding the first letter of your child’s name everywhere!

Our cubbies and our toddler rooms display each child’s name. The first way that toddlers learn to recognize their name is visually!

  • During the learning letters week, your child’s teacher will pick a letter to introduce in fun and new ways. For example, we may use that morning’s snack of blueberries to recognize the letter ‘B’. Further our daily activity will support the letter of the day.

Check in with your teacher on what letter they are learning. Each letter learning week will be organically chosen based on the emergent curriculum teaching style that children learn best when their interests are included.

Week 4 — Nature is All Around Us

Teaching Toddlers About Nature

  • At Lakeside Childcare Centre, we are very blessed to be surrounded by nature and this week, your teacher will incorporate a nature themed activity.

During our many outings, your toddler will learn about trees, rocks, flowers, bugs, ravines & rainy day worms!

We encourage full immersion into nature as one of the many amazing learning tools we can access.

Parents, please dress your child appropriately for the weather for our outdoor excursions (on Lakeside property only)

  • During ‘Nature Learning Week’ we will collect and learn about a variety of mother natures gifts. From fall leaves to rocks, sticks or flowers, your teacher will create a fun art project for the week based on the nature around us.

Parents can join in the fun by going for walks at the park or even doing a treasure nature search in the backyard.
